CHRISTMAS CARDS: Project 1; Take card number 1 and 2. Cut out 1 card making a long/broad strip to include the striking features of the picture. This will become a bookmark. Decorate as required with ribbon. Then send this bookmark to the person who sent you the card with a biblical message on the back. Repeat with second card except omit message. Prayer of intercession is a powerful way to bring before the Lord our specific intentions. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SICK; The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, 11^th February. Mass will be celebrated at Bevan Court for some our housebound parishioners. Details to follow.

PARISH YOUTH GROUP: Meeting THIS Sunday Jan 29^th from 4.15pm- 6.00pm followed by mass at 6pm. Further meetings on Sunday Feb 26^th and Sunday March 25^th. Year 7 upwards.

PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE: I have invited 8 members of the parish to become part of a finance team which will help me to administer and oversee the parish finances. The first meeting will be on Thursday evening at 8pm in MRR.

LENT 2012 begins on Ash Wednesday 22^nd February. Watch this space for Lenten activities.

DEANERY NEWS: The Archbishop has appointed Fr. Harry Curtis as the new Parish Priest of St. Joseph the Worker, Canley and also as Chaplain to the University of Warwick. We shall welcome Fr. Harry at the end of the month. The Archbishop will be sending a ‘pastoral letter’ in February drawing our attention to need for parishes and priests to cooperate together. To date the Deanery discussion have been very positive in looking at ways to work together especially focusing on the work of the ‘partnership areas’ although there may be some need for change and restructuring

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: Unity Week begins on Wednesday, 18^th Jan with a service in all our local churches. St. Thomas More will host the prayer session on Saturday, 21^st Jan, with Mass at 9.00am followed by Breakfast ending with a service of prayer. Do your best to attend a least one other service as well as our own on Saturday.

NEWMAN ASSOCIATION Unity Service: to be held on Saturday 21^st January at 1.00 p.m. in the Chapel of Unity at Coventry Cathedral during Christian Unity Week. Lecture on Tuesday 24^th January: Rev Richard Finn O.P. will speak on “Early Christian Asceticism and its Contemporary Relevance”. Fr Finn is a Dominican from Blackfriars, Oxford.

CATHOLIC PARLIAMENTARY AND PUBLIC POLICY INTERNSHIPS; The Catholics Bishops Conference has organised Parliamentary and Public Policy Internships for recently graduated Catholics. This year we are looking to offer 8 internships to run from September 2012 - July 2013 and include accommodation and subsistence allowances.

THIS SUNDAY: Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, feast of the Magi which is transferred from 6^th January. Epiphany translates as ‘manifest’ or ‘revelation’. This feast is the revealing of Jesus to then nations in the person of the wise men. As they returned to there homeland they carried with them the new news of the incarnation, the revealing of God born in time, a message of hope which still resonates through the world today in the hearts of all Christian folk.

SOLEMNITY OF MARY MOTHER OF GOD: In defining the mystery of the Incarnation, the early church fathers explored the theology surrounding the position and status of Mary, the mother of Jesus. It was at the Council of Ephesus in 431AD that Mary was acclaimed as “THEOTOKOS” Mother of God. As we celebrate her roll in the mystery of our salvation let us rejoice in her maternal intercession. Hail full of grace.

YEAR OF FAITH: Pope Benedict has called 2012 ‘Year of Faith.’ It is an invitation to grow in our personal understanding and devotion to our Faith. We all could do with a little renewal! The ‘year of faith’ is also an invitation to reach out to those who have fallen away from the church and those with no faith. Watch this space.

THE SEASON OF CHRISTMAS; In Rome, the Crib remains until the 2^nd February the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, 40 days after Christmas. In Coventry our Cribs and decorations should come down by Monday, 9^th January, which is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the formal end of the Christmas season. However, do retain 12 Christmas religious cards. Intrigued? Good. Watch and wait.

SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD: In celebrating the nativity or birth of the Lord Jesus, we recall the great mystery which unfolded in that stable in Bethlehem. God’s loving plan of salvation is revealed in the mystery of the incarnation, when through Mary, God became incarnate, taking on human flesh, being born one like us. The whole Christmas event celebrates the activity of God born into humanity for our salvation, the forgiveness of our sins. “Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to people of goodwill.”
CRIB: Do stop and muse upon the image of the crib, considering the great mystery of “Emmanuel, God with us.” The Crib collection this year will be given to ‘Life’ which supports young mothers and families.

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL Over the last three months we have been getting to grips with the new translation. I am delighted to see how quickly you have mastered the new responses. Now that new missals are available do follow the mass more attentively while contemplating upon the beauty and meaning of the words.
REVERENCE IN CHURCH;
Alongside the new translation the practice of bowing or genuflecting before holy communion has been introduced. Approaching the Altar we say, “Lord I am not worthy to have you under my roof, say but the word and my soul shall be healed”: I do encourage everyone to adopt some gesture of reverence as you approach the sacrament.

Gwen Molloy: The Requiem Mass for Gwen Molloy will be said on Friday, 6^th January, 9.00am. Reception into Church on Thursday at 6.30pm followed by Mass at 7.00pm

JUSTICE & PEACE meeting on Wednesday Dec 7th at 7:45PM. Coventry - City of Sanctuary: the challenge to the churches. Fr Tim Brooke, will be talking about the grassroots movement trying to make Coventry a really welcoming place to those who have been forced to flee their own homes, have found sanctuary in this city and have no possibility of returning to their own country. He will mention the major issue of destitution in the city and how it is being tackled. He hopes to be accompanied by a refugee who will share her own story. Everyone welcome.
CHAPEL OF UNITY; Fr Andrew Franklin, from Christ the King, will be saying Mass at 8am this Wednesday, 7th December in the Chapel of Unity at Coventry Cathedral. This might appeal to some of the workers in the city centre.

THIS SUNDAY: THE SEASON OF ADVENT Today we embark upon a wondrous journey through Advent. Advent presents us with a marvellous opportunity to reflect upon two great mysteries of our faith; the mystery of the second coming of Christ whilst remembering his first coming in the mystery of the Incarnation. May I suggest you ponder upon these great mysteries during Advent?
New Altar Missal: Today we have the blessing of the new altar missals (3) to be used in the parish.

DURING THE WEEK IN ADVENT MONDAY Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: Monday from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. This is a time for silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament by which we are called to pray, to listen, and to watch before the Lord.
TUESDAY Mass at 7.00pm will be celebrated at St. Anne’s, Willenhall, one of our partnership parishes. The theme of the homily is ‘Mary: Woman who made History’. Mass will be followed by refreshments. I expect a good turn out please.
WEDNESDAY: INDUCTION MASS at 7.00 p.m for Fr Philip followed by a reception in the school hall. Everyone is invited to celebrate this special event which will be supported by the Deanery Priests. An Induction is the formal ceremony by which people and priest resolve to work together for the benefit of parish, community and church.

NEXT SUNDAY: THE SEASON OF ADVENT The new liturgical year heralds a period of excitement and expectation as we prepare for the Second Coming of Christ while remembering his first coming at Christmas. Approaching this season of grace, Christians all called to be generous in responding to the call “prepare ye the way of the Lord”. How will you prepare for the Lord’s coming?

New Altar Missal: During Mass next Sunday I shall bless to new altar missals (3) to be used in the parish.
Walk with Me: The new advent calendars and prayers booklets are now available at the back of church.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: With the support of the Eucharistic Ministers, there will be a time for silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament every Monday from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. I do hope that many parishioners will response to this call to prayer; to listen, watch and pray before the Lord.
Partnership Parishes: For the Tuesdays of Advent we will join with Corpus Christi and ST. Anne’s for Mass. This year St. Anne’s, Willenhall will act a host. The theme will be based on our Blessed Lady. Mass at 7.00pm
Reverence of the Sacrament: With the introduction of the new translation of the Missal, can I remind you of the importance to bow or genuflect as you approach the sanctuary to receive Holy Communion.
Friday Fasting: Advent is a good time to renew your commitment to fasting on a Friday.

ST. Thomas More Primary School: As you will be aware, we need a new school building. Consultation and negotiation are ongoing but may I ask that every parishioner remember this intention in your prayers. St. Thomas More: Pray for us.

World Gifts; Next Sunday we shall be looking for donations towards gifts organised through CAFOD to help the people of the developing world. There will be a voluntary collection outside the church for world gifts next Sunday.

FOOD for the HOMELESS and NEEDY: When out Christmas shopping could you buy an extra grocery or toiletry item which may be given to the homeless, needy and refugees in Coventry. Please leave at the back of church.

“Pilgrims of truth, pilgrims of peace”, On 27^thOctober 2011, religious leaders gathered, once again, in Assisi, to mark the 25^thanniversary of the first such meeting in 1986, and to pledge, again, a shared commitment to peace and justice. Pope Benedict XVI has put this meeting under the motto of “pilgrims of truth, pilgrims of peace”, which recalls the search for truth and goodness that all human beings share.

This Sunday Today is World Mission Sunday. “As the Father sent me, so am I sending you”. By nature the Church is missionary for Jesus commanded his followers to preach the Gospel to all nations and to baptise them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We all have a role in the proclamation of the Gospel: do play your part in announcing the Good News. Share your Faith and give LIFE!

FATHER TIMOTHY The Thanksgiving Mass for Fr. Timothy was a beautiful celebration of all that is good in our parish. In cooperation with our parish Primary School, Bishop Ullathorne, South Coventry Churches and with Fr. Timothy’s family, we were able to give thanks for his ministry and the great contribution Fr. Timothy has made to St. Thomas More Parish and the wider catholic community in Coventry and beyond. My thanks especially to everyone involved, the musicians, servers, choirs, purple sash brigade, to the school children and their parents, Mrs Wilson, the Headteacher of our school and to all who helped in any way. New Translation of the Roman Missal; Over the last few weeks we have laboured together getting to grips with the new translation. I am delighted to see the progress we have made in mastering the new responses. Do keep up your vigilance and appreciation of the new translation. New Missals will be available soon, great Christmas presents!
Receiving Holy Communion: In addition to the introduction of the new translation of the Roman Missal and Friday fasting, the Church would encourage all Catholic to reverence the Blessed Sacrament before they receive Holy Communion. This should take the form of a gentle bow or genuflection as you approach the Eucharist.

Friday Fasting: Following the reintroduction of Friday fasting I hope that you are experiencing the benefits of abstaining on a Friday? This is a spiritual invitation to grow by putting our trust more firmly, in God.

New Translation of the Mass – www.liturgyoffice.org.uk gives a comparison between what you say now and what you will say, from this September. Please be assured that individuals and parish communities across the country, and indeed the English-speaking world are going to be adopting this revised translation in the coming weeks and months. It will have its moments of confusion, especially where people are used to certain responses. But it might also help us to appreciate the same Mass in a new way.

World Youth Day – Fr Timothy and 10 young people from our parish took part in this event, culminating in the Open-Air Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI, in Madrid, last Sunday. Thank you to all parishioners, family and friends for their support in helping our young people to make the trip. At the end of the final Mass, Pope Benedict announced that the next World Youth Day would be held in Rio di Janiero, Brazil, in 2013. For young adults who will be 18+ in the summer of 2013, this is the time to start considering the task of fundraising, but for the purpose of taking part in a most amazing, worldwide gathering of young Catholics.

Clergy Arrivals in Coventry - We pray for Fr Philip Gay as he prepares to come to our parish in the coming week. We pray also for the continuing work of Alton Castle Youth Retreat Centre, where he has served as Director for the past 6 years. There are other clergy arriving in our city and deanery. In addition to Fr David Gnosill who has been appointed Parish Priest of our partner parish of Corpus Christi, Fr George Bennett will take up his responsibility as Parish Priest of St Patrick’s in Wood End, whilst Fr Andrew Franklin continues to assist Canon Tom Farrell at Christ the King. Fr Paul Johnson leaves Christ the King to become Parish Priest of St Joseph’s, Warndon in Worcester. We thank Fr Paul for making available to us the Weekday Mass sheets in recent times.

St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, Coventry – celebrates 40 years this September. The first event to celebrate this Birthday, will be a Thanksgiving Mass at St John Fisher Church, Tiverton Road, Wyken, at 7pm on Friday 9^th September, followed by a Buffet. Anybody who has any links with the school, past or present is very welcome. Please let the school know if you can attend, to help with catering and numbers. But still just turn up if you can. Parish Shop – now stocking a range of books by Pope Benedict XVI, pictures and prayer cards marking the occasion of the Beatification of Pope John Paul II, and greeting cards for every occasion, and there is a variety of resources now available to help you understand and come to know the changes to the translation of the Mass which comes into effect this September.

Stepping Stones – We are now looking for parishioners who might be suitable to take on the work of: helping to set up, making drinks etc, from 1pm to 3pm on a Friday afternoon. It is hoped that if enough people are suitable, a team could be set up, and the burden not all fall on the same people. It is rewarding work which in a very simple way helps to support families of the parish.

Thank you – As I celebrate my final Sunday Masses as Parish Priest here today, I would like to express my thanks to the parish community for all the blessings that I have received through my ministry here over the past 7 years. Taking over as Parish Priest from Mgr Tom Gavin and Fr Jonathan gave me a great insight into the richness of the life of the parish, and acknowledging Mgr Gavin’s commitment to the priesthood and the Church right to the end was very humbling. The partnerships that we have in our parish with neighbouring Catholic parishes, and with the Christians of the South Coventry Churches, are important in recognising that the way forward both as Catholics and as a wider Christian family is our links with others, and never trying to be self-sufficient in our church and our parish. Within this parish, there are too many individuals and groups to thank by name. But please accept my sincere thanks for your kindness and support to me, in so many ways. More especially thank you for all that you do for this parish, which is so often done selflessly and without praise or recognition. As I reflect on the sacramental and pastoral side of my work over these seven years, there are many people who have inspired me, who are now with God. It has also been a privilege to share in welcoming new lives to the parish. The priesthood is a wonderful vocation, and the Church as a place of welcome and belonging can be here for anybody who chooses it. I wish every blessing to the work of St Thomas More School and Bishop Ullathorne Schools, and am grateful for my involvement with them over these years. As I leave the parish, I ask you to continue to pray for me as I take up my responsibilities as Vicar General. And as you welcome Fr Philip to the parish, continue to be a people who live in the hope of the Resurrection; whose faith shows in joyfulness of spirit; who are a credible advert for the Good News of Jesus Christ! Fr Timothy.

African Day Mass – St Elizabeth’s Church, Foleshill today (14^th August) at 2.30pm. All parishioners welcome. A celebration of the many African countries and cultures represented in our city today. The Mass will be followed by a celebration of food and music.

World Youth Day in Madrid (TODAY) – Please pray for the young adults who are representing our parish at this event, which culminates this morning, with a Mass for 1 million young adults, with Pope Benedict XVI: Josh Baker, Hannah Baker, Daniel Crilly, Steven Ehue, Stephanie Ehue, Joseph Lee, Katie McConnachie, Paul Mills, Molly Poole, Victoria Wooltorton. The event has taken these young people from our parish to the historic city of Valladolid, for many years and still currently a place where students for the priesthood for our diocese and our country receive some of their formation. Families of the city have hosted our young people. Then, they moved on to Madrid, where there have been sessions of catechesis – teaching on the faith, given by Cardinals and Bishops from around the world. It is traditional that at the closing Mass of World Youth Day, the Holy Father announces the venue of the next World Youth Day. That will be in 2 or 3 years’ time, and will be open to young adults who will be 18+ at that time.

The Pope in Madrid – For those who wish to follow the Pope’s trip to Spain from the middle of this week to the culmination of the World Youth Day celebrations, today, EWTN – a free channel on Sky, gives good coverage. Channel 589.

World Youth Day in Madrid– Please pray for the young adults who are representing our parish at this event, with Pope Benedict XVI, at the moment: Josh Baker, Hannah Baker, Daniel Crilly, Steven Ehue, Stephanie Ehue, Joseph Lee, Katie McConnachie, Paul Mills, Molly Poole, Victoria Wooltorton. Thank you to parishioners and friends for the support you have given to the young people through fundraising ventures over the past 2 years, and to those who have baked cakes for Sunday cake sales. The theme for this World Youth Day is: Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in faith. The Patron Saints associated with this event are: Blessed John Paul II, St Ignatius of Loyola, St Teresa of Avila, St Francis Xavier, and St Rose of Lima. Pray that this event, which will engage about a million young adults from around the world, will be a special moment of faith, and a memory and influence that will last a lifetime. Pray also for the Holy Father, making another pastoral visit, and witnessing as an apostle.

Spark in the Park – August 2011 - an outreach for Coventry run by people from a number of churches. It is a week of outrageous fun for children, young people and their families. Activities will include loads of inflatables, football, craft activities, face painting, quizzes and gunge. It will take place in the Memorial Park from Monday 8th August to Friday 12th at 1.30 pm (till 4pm) and it's free. It has been a very popular attraction for the school holidays, in recent years, and for family and friends to enjoy.

St Thomas More School Summer Ball – Very many thanks to parents and parishioners for the hard work that made the recent fundraising event such a success, the total now being £9,000 towards ICT provision for our school.

Missio (the new organisation name for the Red charity boxes in many homes) – 75^th Anniversary Mass, will be held at St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, today (Sunday), at 3pm. This Mass is open to all parishioners, especially those who support the work of the foreign missions by owning a red charity mission box, or those who serve the parish as box collectors and counters.

Formation Update – Our parishioner, Leo Poole, has completed the first year of his formation programme towards being ordained as a deacon. This is a four-year course. Please pray for Leo and his family, as he continues this formation, part time, at Oscott College. Leo also completes his term as Chair of Governors at St Thomas More Primary School, which has been a demanding role during challenging times in the life of our school. Our gratitude is due to him and to all the governors of our schools.

Oscotian Magazine – the annual journal produced by the seminary is available today. It is free of charge, and celebrates in a particular way the life of the college community, during the year of Pope Benedict’s historic visit to Birmingham and to Oscott.

Parish Fete – The weather held, the community gathered, and once again much hard work and a good parish spirit led to a very successful Fete. Thank you to those who planned and organised the day, to those who gave prizes, donations or contributed in any way to the event. Thank you to Mrs Wilson and to Mr Kirby for making the school available and for their welcome and help before, during and after the Fete. The amount raised was a wonderful £5,957-00 which will be divided between our church and our primary school needs. At this stage, and to help with planning for future events, you are asked to give some consideration to feedback on the fete. Raffle prize winners have been informed.

St Thomas More School Summer Ball – Very many thanks to parents and parishioners for the hard work that has gone into this fundraising event, which took place yesterday, and to parishioners and friends who supported the venture in any way.

Tuesday Society – Now finished for the summer. Re-commences on 13^th September which will be the Society’s 20^th year!

Extend group – Thursday 9.45am for 10.00am. Gentle, seated exercise to music. Margaret Roper Room. All welcome.

Our Sunday homilies are currently giving some attention to the changes that will come in the words of the Mass. How many of the new responses are becoming familiar to you? Missio (the new organisation name for the Red charity boxes in many homes) – 75^th Anniversary Mass, will be held at St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, next Sunday (24^th), at 3pm. This Mass is open to all parishioners, especially those who support the work of the foreign missions by owning a red charity mission box, or those who serve the parish as box collectors and counters.

Mass of Thanksgiving Mass for the School Year. At the 11am Mass today, we thank God for the blessings of the past year. We ask God’s blessing on staff who are moving on to new appointments, and on those children soon to move to secondary school.

Corpus Christi Parish – Our partner parish has a new parish priest: Fr David Gnosill. We pray for him in his new apostolate.

Ordination to the Priesthood of Craig Szmidt – Fr Craig (who was in the parish with us as a student for the priesthood) was ordained a priest for our diocese last week. We congratulate Fr Craig and his family, and we pray for vocations to the priesthood.

Ordination to the Diaconate of Michael Glover – Deacon Michael was ordained in the chapel at Oscott College as this academic year drew to a close. He will continue his formation at Oscott College until his priestly ordination next summer.

Deanery Youth Fun Day & Mass – for secondary school age. At Cardinal Wiseman School & St Patrick’s Church. This Saturday (16^th July). Begins at 12 noon at the school, Potters Green Road (BBQ, Wii, Football competition, bouncy castle. £5 admission. All will walk to church for 5.30pm Mass, and then return to the school for picking up. Please encourage our young people to attend. Families are most welcome to join the day for Mass at St Patrick’s, Deedmore Road, at 5.30pm.

Giving Something Back – A very special word of thanks to Anne Mee and Maria Banbrook who have supported the work of Stepping Stones, our parish based parent and toddler group over many years. Their work of hospitality and care have enabled the group to go from strength to strength, last year winning a national award for Most Outstanding Parent and Toddler Group. We are now looking for parishioners who might be suitable to take on this work: helping to set up, making drinks etc, from 1pm to 3pm on a Friday afternoon. It is hoped that if enough people are suitable, a team could be set up, and the burden not all fall on the same people

Elizabeth Garry RIP – The Garry family would like to thank our parish clergy, as well as Fr Jonathan and Mgr Pat Browne for the Reception and Funeral Mass for Elizabeth last week. Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi – The Annual Coventry Procession in honour of the Blessed Sacrament takes place in the City Centre, beginning at St Osburg’s Church hall at 3pm. This is for the whole Catholic community of Coventry. All welcome.

Today, we welcome back to the 11am Mass, the First Holy Communion candidates for this year. There is a special invitation for these children to be part of the afternoon procession in the city centre, dressed in their First Holy Communion attire.

On Thursday evenings, the RCIA sessions will be given over to a presentation of the new Mass: looking at the texts, saying them together, and preparing for the changes that are going to be asked of us as parish communities, from September.

Ordination to the Priesthood of Craig Szmidt – This Saturday (2^nd July) at 12 noon, in Wolstanton, North Staffordshire. All parishioners are invited to share in the joy of this day, but you must sign up immediately. Transport (for those who sign up) will leave here at 9.45am on Saturday. It should get us there in good time, but you can never be too early, to get a good seat! After the event, the coach will leave Wolstanton at 4pm for the return journey, which will give people a chance to stay for refreshments. It might be worth bringing something by way of a snack to eat between our morning departure and whatever food might be offered.

The setting up sessions for the fete will be on Saturday 9^th at 4pm, and then on Sunday 10^th at 7.30am.

Lourdes Pilgrimage 2012 – Following the many blessings of this year’s Lourdes pilgrimage, the dates for next year’s pilgrimage are: 2^nd – 8^th June 2012. It might be more manageable to pay in instalments. For more details: Andy & Alison on 76 441436.
